Living in Humboldt, it’d be surprising to hear someone say they’d never seen a Sex Wax air freshener hanging from a car’s rearview mirror. If you aren’t familiar with the token NorCal potpourri, you may wonder what the heck Sex Wax even is and why someone would have it on display in their vehicle.
Well, it’s not just that people are overly open with their lube preferences. Mr. Zogg’s Sex Wax is a brand of surfboard wax that surfers use to wax their boards. The wax is rubbed on the top surface or “deck” of a surfboard to allow traction and grip for the surfer. However, at this point, the Sex Wax air fresheners might be more popular than the surfboard wax itself.
“I don’t surf. I just like how it smells,” senior Hope Moss said. “They’re cheap and they smell good but not too strong like a lot of other air fresheners.”
Junior Lootah Hall has a similar experience.
“I like to look like all the surfers, even though I’m not one,” he said. “It wafts a nice aroma through the vehicle. I don’t think it has anything to do with it saying ‘sex,’ it just smells good.”
Aliviana Bacca-Lastra is a die-hard Sex Wax fan.
“I grew up with a surfer dad and the smell of it reminds me of childhood,” she said. “The coconut one is the best.”
From personal experience, the smell could be described as a soft coconut fragrance that brings feelings of summer, friends, and the beach.
Humboldt citizen Mariah Pinar grew up in southern California and had many friends who surfed regularly and experienced the smell firsthand as a teen.
“My friends went down to the beach all the time. Sex Wax has a distinctive smell. People who surf know that smell, and people who hang out around surfers know that smell. That was in my high school days, like in 2006,” she said.
Sex Wax is the go-to surfboard wax for experienced surfers, and you can still enjoy the scent if you don’t surf.
“It reminds you of fond memories and a [whole lot of fun]. Even if you aren’t a surfer, that smell brings back memories of fun times with friends on the beach,” Pinar said. “From SoCal to NorCal, Sex Wax is the best wax.”
