Over the last few weeks we’ve been in school, the boys’ bathroom has already been closed multiple times. We keep facing this problem of closing the main boys’ bathroom in front of the school due to the uncleanliness of the bathroom. All the boys who go in that bathroom have seen all the food, pencils, Marijuana pens, and the piss all over the floor, urinals, and toilets. Every boy knows the problems that the bathroom faces; it’s a problem caused by the students who use the bathroom.
Senior Waylon O’Connor said that the boys’ bathrooms at the front of the school are “atrocious.” He believes that the way to improve this problem is for the boys who use that bathroom to “learn how to aim.”
Sophomore Sebastian Jarquin said that the bathroom smells really bad, and he believes that it’s very disrespectful to leave the bathrooms this messy; it’s disrespectful to the staff who have to clean them. Another anonymous student said that the bathrooms are “pretty very bad,” and the boys’ bathroom is a “dangerous habitat.” He said he’s seen public gas station bathrooms that look better than the boys’ Arcata High bathrooms.

Ivan Kubacki and Jules Hiller, reporters for the Arcata High Pepperbox, interviewed Jim Hogan, who is the head custodian. Jim had some very insightful information about the boys’ bathroom and some advice, not only for the boys who use the bathrooms but for everyone at AHS. Hogan said to “show pride as a student as I show pride as a custodian” and to “treat [the school] like you treat your home.” Hogan believes that every student should respect the bathroom because they are not the only people here.
We all have to use the restrooms here on campus, and keeping them clean and having “better aim” is an easy way to make our bathrooms safer and sanitary for everyone.
