Valentine’s Day is often associated with romance, couples, and grand gestures. Yet, there’s another celebration that deserves just as much attention: Galentine’s Day! Made to be a day to celebrate friendships, especially among us gals, Galentine’s reminds us that love doesn’t have to be romantic to be meaningful.
In high school, our friendships often shape our daily lives. They affect who we go to lunch with, where we sit in class, and who we go to basketball games with. So, it’s extra important to celebrate the platonic loves of your lives!
“I will always love my girls more than any man,” senior Sophia Beld stated.
Galentine’s provides a time to appreciate the people who support you through everything and anything. The girls who listen to your late-night rants, convince you to text that boy, and laugh with you at things no one else would understand. Unlike romantic relationships, which may come and go (especially in our crippling dating scene of nonchalant men), friendships provide long-term comfort and stability. They help us grow into who we are, and are a constant reminder that we are not alone.
“Friendships are more reliable than anything else in your life,” Beld said. “They are your support system, and you cannot live without community.”
Celebrating Galentine’s Day can be simple and inclusive. It doesn’t require expensive gifts or elaborate plans. Grabbing dinner with the girls, exchanging handmade gifts, having a movie night, or even just spending time together after school can make the day special. These small moments of appreciation show friends that they are valued, seen, and loved. In a busy school environment, taking a moment to recognize those bonds can make a big difference.
“I would definitely do some decorations, little pastries, fruit, heart pizzas, maybe a rom-com. Wine and Dine” is how Beld is planning on celebrating this Galentine’s.
Galentine’s Day also challenges the idea that Valentine’s Day is only for couples. For those of us who aren’t in romantic relationships, let alone have a valentine, the holiday can sometimes feel awkward or isolating. Focusing on friendship shifts the narrative from what someone might be missing to what they already have. It reinforces the idea that love exists in many forms, and none is less important than others.
By embracing Galentine’s Day, we make Valentine’s season more welcoming and meaningful. It becomes a celebration of connection, loyalty, and shared joy rather than just romance. This year, let’s celebrate the friends who make our days brighter and recognize that platonic love deserves its own spotlight.
