The 3v3 basketball tournament has been an annual event at Arcata High during March Madness for many years. Many different staff members have run the event in the past, including Mr. Kane and Mr. Ghisseti; however, Charlie Espinoza has taken the leadership role this time around. Over the years, the tournament has gained significant popularity, with 10 teams of three players encompassing a wide variety of basketball experience participating this year.
The rules of the tournament are fairly simple. Games run for 10 minutes with a running clock. Calling fouls and keeping score is left up to the teams playing. At the end of the 10 minutes, whoever’s team is up wins the game. As for making the teams, each group is allowed only one varsity basketball player.
The impact of the 3v3 tournament on the school, specifically the basketball fans on campus, is significant. For the participants, the tournament gives basketball-loving students an opportunity to play the game they love during lunch, while also giving them the chance to run around and get some energy out, which for many high-schoolers can be essential. As for everyone else, while not everyone comes to watch the games as they take place, word about what’s happening gets around campus very quickly. Overall, the 3v3 tournament will leave a lasting impact on everyone who participates, and we must do everything we can to keep it going for future classes to come.
