The school administration has decided to remove the option of independent study PE after this summer as part of a move to make students learn less in school.
Many senior students have done their second year of required PE as independent study over the summer. This is particularly helpful for students who want to take one more academic class, rather than having to take a second year of PE.
“PE is required for a reason,” an administrator said, “So students have less time to learn in school.” The administrator pointed out that a high priority is giving students a chance to scroll on social media, and PE is a great place to do that.
Although this time is provided, some students choose to instead take academic classes. In order to fulfil the PE requirement, students log their own physical activity from outside of school over the summer.
The average PE period consists of an hour and a half of lazy students who rebel by scrolling Instagram, occasionally interrupted by physical activity. Due to crowded class sizes, PE teachers are unable to regulate the screen time in large spaces.
With how productive the class is, it’s a real shame that students are trying to be actually active on their own instead.
Another issue is that many students participate in sports outside of school. While school sports can waive PE, these club sports cannot. “We have reason to believe that many sports that aren’t under the school’s authority are completely fictitious, solely designed for students to get out of PE,” the administrator said. The source for this is “a hunch,” according to the administration.
“There’s much left to be determined,” the Administrator said, “there was talk of cutting all funding from the English department to hire 10 more PE teachers, but we might want to cut the Science department, too.”
