The World Baseball Classic is known as the most prestigious championship when it comes to the sport of baseball.
The most recent baseball classic was this year, 2026, where the Dominican Republic won, which was amazing for their country because they were not starstruck with major league talent, but they pulled off the unimaginable. Maikel Garcia, who is a role player in the MLB, won MVP for his country, which was well deserved. The most recent Classic took place in four different places, with two in the US: Miami, Florida, and Houston, Texas. Then it went to Tokyo, Japan, and finally landed in Puerto Rico.
The World Baseball Classic is a tournament of baseball teams collected all across the world, including the USA, Dominican Republic, Japan, Venezuela, and Mexico. With the United States producing so many superstars for the MLB, it is surprising that they have only claimed one title in the WBC. This is the same as the Dominican Republic, which does not produce superstars as the US does.
The most accomplished team in this tournament’s history is Japan, with 3 championships. At this year’s classic, Venezuela captured its very first gold medal in 2026, against the United States of America 2-1. This was very emotional for the country of Venezuela, which had not won previously.
Before the first World Baseball Classic in 2006, Worldwide baseball was not organized other than different events like the Summer Olympics or occasional charity events.
Before the WBC, when baseball was played during the summer Olympics, those games could only be played by amateur players. Nobody who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) could play in these Olympics. The Summer Olympics did not allow players in the MLB to compete until the mid 1990s, when only a few did for countries like the USA and Japan. But when the WBC was created in 2006, more countries competed, such as the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Italy, and Venezuela.
It was very difficult for the commissioner of the MLB at the time, Bud Selig, to have this international event take place, because it happened one month before spring training and the regular season start, which had a lot of managers in the league worried about their players suffering a serious injury, which could affect their team.
The World Baseball Classic was highlighted in the beginning years by Japan winning the gold medal in 2006 and 2009. The MVP was Daisuke Matsuzaka, who was a pitcher in the MLB for the New York Mets and the Boston Red Sox.
The 2013 classic was won for the first time by a country other than Japan. The Dominican Republic won its first gold medal, with its MVP being Robinson Cano, an infamous 2nd Basemen at the time for the New York Yankees.
For the first time in 2017, the United States won a gold medal in baseball, which is still in the MLB pitching today, but was a Toronto Blue Jay when he won the MVP for the United States of America.
There would not be a World Baseball Classic until 2023, where Japan had won their 3rd gold medal in the classic with a monster team of talent consisting of Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Roki Sasaki, who currently play for the Los Angeles Dodgers on a dynasty. Shohei Ohtani, to nobody’s surprise, won the MVP for Japan, who is a 3x MVP in the MLB.
