With the price of gas being so high, California drivers are enraged. I became curious as to why gas prices may vary so much from state to state. To put it simply, gas prices vary due to the ease of access that each state has to oil. In addition, gas prices fluctuate according to the taxes and fees that come with providing it. For example, the reason gas prices in California are so high is that California has some of the highest excess taxes and environmental fees, not to mention how difficult it is to transport gas through mountainous areas such as Humboldt County. Compared to somewhere like New Mexico, where fracking is prevalent, people there have much easier access to gas.
