President Donald Trump addressed the nation Tuesday evening in the longest State of the Union address in American history, breaking Bill Clinton’s previously held record from 2000.
During Trump’s speech, which held a duration of one hour and 47 minutes, the president touched on what he called “a transformation like no one has ever seen before,” following former President Joe Biden’s single term in office, which Trump characterized as being marred by chaos and disaster.
The address’s main goal was clear: to appeal to voters, particularly the parts of Trump’s conservative base who are becoming slightly disillusioned by perceptions that the president hasn’t fully fixed the economy or has taken missteps in immigration policy.
Trump’s need to maintain the coalition that got him into the white house for the midterms is clear. If he fails to do so, there is a good chance Democrats will take back the House and possibly the Senate, curbing Trump’s power to carry out his agenda significantly. This scenario could even lead to impeachment, possibly.
Trump spent a good amount of the address on his claimed successes in curbing illegal immigration, focusing particularly on “Somali pirates” who were the main pretext for the Department of Homeland Security’s “Metro Surge,” sending thousands of Border Patrol agents into Minneapolis, Minnesota, this Winter. That saga ended after thousands were detained indefinitely, two American citizens were shot and killed, and a large general strike by the Twin Cities populace took place.
Additionally, Trump expressed a significant amount of confidence in the American economy during the address.
“Our spirit is restored, inflation is plummeting, incomes are rising fast,” he said, “The roaring economy is roaring like never before.” The president highlighted these affirmations to appeal to his populist base, who have been clamoring for him to focus more on the economy.
Trump zeroed in specifically on the price of prescription drugs, with him insisting, “In my first year of the second term, should be my third term, but… strange things happen, I took prescription drugs… from the highest price in the entire world, to the lowest.”
This is one of many things fact checkers have protested as being incorrect. According to NPR news, American prescription drug prices are still by far the highest in the world despite Trump’s “Most Favored Nation” drug policy, which seeks to lower prices to those of neighboring countries through price controls.
Trump also added that drug prices have fallen “500, 600 percent,” regardless of the fact that this is not possible. Drug companies are currently not paying Americans to receive their drugs.
The president’s comment regarding a third term comes as little surprise to both sides of the political spectrum, as he has a long history of protesting that his 2020 presidential election loss to Biden was stolen from him, despite these allegations being long debunked.
Trump also took some time to accuse Democrats of being “crazy” for not standing up after accusing “left-wing judges” of ripping children from their parents’ arms if they did not accept their child had transitioned genders.
Moreover, he added, “We’re lucky we have a country… Democrats are destroying our country, but we’ve stopped it just in the nick of time.”
The Supreme Court’s recent decision, which asserted that the president could not unilaterally place tariffs on foreign countries, was mentioned by Trump. He maintained his view that the decision was a poor one and that he would continue to exact tariffs through other emergency power-related methods. Nevertheless, he did not express any personal attacks on the justices during the speech, which some outlets expected him to do.
Most apparent of all, though, across the entire address, was Trump’s use of high-profile guests as talking points.
This included the U.S. Olympic men’s hockey team, which just recently won the gold medal in the ‘26 Olympic Winter Games. The team’s star goalie, Connor Hellebuyck, was notably awarded the highly prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Other guests honored were Enrique Marquez, a former political prisoner of recently arrested Venezuelan president Nicolaus Maduro, highlighted to show the Trump admin’s military and diplomatic successes in Venezuela. This comes despite Trump praising Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodriguez, during the address, who served as Maduro’s vice president before his January arrest.
Rodriguez oversaw the Bolivarian intelligence service, which acted as the Venezuelan state’s secret police, cracking down on political dissent and arresting many without due process, including people like Marquez.
Dalilah Coleman, a seven-year-old girl injured in a car crash involving an undocumented individual, was another honored guest. As was Royce Williams, a 100-year-old Korean War veteran, given the Medal of Honor by Trump.
A coast guard swimmer who undertook courageous actions in the Texas floods of 2025, a National Guard sergeant shot by a former Afghan CIA operative, and a formerly transgender woman now retransitioned, spotlighted due to the administration’s stance on Transgender issues, were also included in the ceremony.
These reality TV show-style features are what took up a very significant portion of the address, boring some people, but intriguing many, too, as Trump has a storied history on television.
However, “props” were not just used by the President and his Republican party colleagues.
In Trump’s previous address to Congress last year, Democratic Representative Al Green of Texas’s ninth congressional district heckled the President while he was speaking and was thrown out. This time, Green displayed a sign that protested a post on the president’s social media, which depicted former president Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama, who are Black, as jungle apes.
Green’s sign read, “BLACK PEOPLE AREN’T APES!”
The congressman was promptly ejected from the venue. His protests, derisive heckling from other Democratic congresspeople, and Trump’s attacks on the Democratic party throughout his speech underscored what many outlets view as the true takeaway of the night.
America is deeply divided.
