The demolition of the east wing of the White House has received a lot of attention from the public. The ballroom is a very interesting choice to build and is the biggest renovation President Donald Trump has made. The ballroom, so far, is planned to be used for hosting larger events indoors.
Trump announced in July of 2025 that he would be adding a ballroom next to the east wing of the White House. Trump pledged that the White House wouldn’t be touched and that the ballroom would just be near it. One morning, citizens noticed the East Wing being demolished.
The East Wing of the White House has played a significant role in the building’s evolving function. First added in 1902 during Theodore Roosevelt’s renovation, the East Wing served mainly as a formal reception area and public entrance. Later, it became the main office of the first lady and her staff. Jacqueline Kennedy used the First Lady’s office to help her husband organize events and coordinate public tours.

This should not be one of the top priorities of our president, given the current situation with the government shutdown. The way he went about it, as well, isn’t something that I agree with. He didn’t check the historical background of the building and was trying to be sneaky about the reconstruction. He also went against his words about how the construction would take place.
Other students expressed similar frustration. Freshman Jubilee Kraft said, “ I don’t feel like a politician in his position should lie like that, saying one thing and then doing a completely different thing.” This interview was short and sweet, but there was a notable sense of emotion in the air.
Senior Heron Cromwell had strong opinions about how the money should have been spent. He feels that this project was a waste of money. He believes that the money “could have gone to helping veterans or people in need.” He brought up how former President Barack Obama had painted over tennis courts and added basketball hoops, and “that definitely didn’t cost $300 million.”
Overall, the public opinion on the White House ballroom project reflects a mix of curiosity and concern. Some citizens question the cost and purpose of the renovation, while others stay curious about how it will be used by our leader. As the project continues, it’s important to point out as of now, Donald Trump doesn’t plan to name the building after himself.
