A new hole in the wall has arrived in Old Town, Eureka. A small door, in a busy location, the place blends right in. Covered in murals, on a busy Friday night market, you’d never know it was there. Inside, the space is lightly decorated and comfortably small.
Service was simple and friendly, not overdone, and quick. With only about 5 main ramen bowls to choose from, the restaurant is a bit more specialized which is great for indecisive diners.
I asked for recommendations, and they pointed out their most popular dish, the Tonkotsu ramen. It included braised pork belly, and standard soft boiled egg and egg noodles. The dish also included, wood ear mushrooms, bamboo shoots, green onions and pickled red ginger. The rich bone broth really stood out to me. It was extremely high quality, warm and mixed well with the available chili sauces.
The desserts weren’t bad either. Yuzu cheesecake, a rich tart with whipped cream, tasted excellent, but worth 12 dollars, maybe not. Second was a taiyaki, a fish shaped waffle filled with red bean paste, served with taro and whipped cream.
As far as value goes, it was a bit tough to justify. 18 dollars for a large bowl of ramen is sadly not uncommon nowadays, but it does feel super expensive. Other competitors such as Susukino charge slightly more, and the food is not quite as good. The dishes were large, tasty, and well presented. If you’re looking for a new lunch spot in Eureka, give Koroko Ramen a try.
