Arcata Women’s Soccer beats Eureka, their rival team, in a home pre-season match 5-3 on Thursday, August 28th.
The Arcata girls had a strong beginning and an amazing outcome. The wins and losses have been alternating between the teams for years, and this year, Arcata is determined to win.
“They’re our first team with good competition,” senior captain Jada Lusk said. The game was paced, aggressive, and had a lot of energy. They had to stay very focused, play a lot of possession, and stay on the ball. Throughout the halves, they continued with their composure, keeping their energy up, keeping each other motivated and cheering for each other, throughout the entire game.
“I think staying motivated throughout the game is what kept us going,” Lusk said. It’s impressive not to get down during an intense game. Before the game, they were really excited. They would listen to music while warming up, then they’d do their tiger song/chant and get hype.
“It’s the most intimidating out of all the teams,” Sonja Vevoda-Wahlig, their goalie, said. Over the years, it’s been a head-to-head game between the Logger and the Tigers.
“It is always a very tough match,” Melody Diaz said. Diaz explained that both teams were very competitive.
“In the second half, we fell to their level and started playing badly like they do, not playing to our full ability,” Vevoda-Wahlig said. They never backed down from the challenge and kept going. Anytime the Arcata girls would score, they would be very enthusiastic to keep the game positive for each other.
The Arcata girls played an amazing game, showing what they’re capable of, proving themselves in front of everyone. And in the end, the Arcata girls secured the win over the Eureka Loggers.
