Now that Humboldt weather has finally started escaping the cold and rain, spring has officially begun. The sun is starting to come out, and flowers are beginning to bloom. What better way to celebrate this shift in the weather than with a spring picnic!
Picnics can be done in all sorts of ways. Whether they be at a park, at the beach, or in a meadow, you can’t go wrong. Still, some AHS students have firm opinions about the best way to picnic. The beach is an especially popular place among AHS students.

“I like Clam Beach, but also Moonstone,” junior Fionn Conroy said. “Beaches are my top pick.” Conroy especially likes to have picnics at sunset while at the beach.
Some students don’t prefer a specific place and enjoy a variety of picnic locations. These include the beach, parks, or large fields/meadows.
There are lots of options when it comes to the food you should bring on a picnic in spring. Some prefer more snack-like options, while others prefer to have more of a meal set-up.
“If I’m going on a picnic with people, then it’s fun to make a charcuterie board together,” Conroy said. “But then if it’s just me and my dog or something, then I’ll just buy something because it’s quicker.”
As the weather gets warmer, it’s time to move away from layering clothes and start wearing skirts, dresses, shorts, and tank tops. Embracing floral patterns can also be a fun way to celebrate the beginning of spring.
Another way to embrace the season is through music. When having a picnic, listening to more upbeat and happy music can help welcome the sunshine. Freshman Naomi Rush Copple enjoys listening to, “some kind of calm, summery and breezy music.”
Combining music preferences with your friends can also introduce you to more kinds of music to listen to this spring. Music streaming platforms like Spotify have a feature that allows you to create a playlist with friends where you can each add your own songs to the playlist.
“Me and my friends will make a shared playlist. So we’ll all combine our own music together, so it’s an array of different things,” Conroy said.
Many students agree that it’s also better to have a picnic with a smaller group of friends, rather than in a large friend group.
“It feels more intimate. It’s easier to plan and it feels more bonding, because if there are tons of people, then sometimes it’s like you don’t really even get to visit with anyone,” Conroy stated.
“Picnics are more fun when it’s like a little blanket and it’s just you and two other friends having girls’ time,” Rush Copple said.
Many factors go into having the ideal spring picnic, and it’s important to know how to picnic the right way in Humboldt.
So don’t miss out on having the best spring picnics and enjoying the sunshine as it starts to come out.
