Junior Luke Lemke and senior Jackson Strand made a statement against Del Norte on Friday night. The Tigers, who are now 3-0 on the season, beat the Warriors 35-6 on the road.
“It shows a great statement to the rest of the county about how good we can be,” Lemke said.
To start the scoring for the Tigers, Lemke found Strand for a 65 yard touchdown.
With about four minutes left of the first, Del Norte was able to recover an Arcata fumble, and then score a 16-yard rushing touchdown. But with a missed field goal by the Warriors, the Tigers were able to keep their 7-6 lead.
Lemke quickly responded with his own 51 yard touchdown to close the first at 14-6.
There was no looking back for the Tigers.
Opening up the 2nd quarter, Lemke found Strand yet again for a 75 yard touchdown.
“I think I did good,” Strand said. “Probably the best game I had this year.”
Strand received for 148 yards, and also had excellent defensive plays including an interception in the 2nd quarter.
Lemke rushed for about 55 yards to earn him his second touchdown of the night. Lemke finished the night with 166 rushing yards and 235 passing yards.
After his ecstatic performance against Fortuna, senior Dayquan Dunn rounded off the scoring with a 50 yard touchdown in the third.
“We just get to have fun out there,” Head coach Matt Magers said.
With the Tigers leading 35-6, they were able to start playing some of their younger roster. Juniors Miguel Obezo and Ethan Munoz got to get some plays in as the quarterback and running back.
“These guys work hard all week, for months and months all summer,” Magers said. “They deserve it.”
The Tigers have a long trip ahead of them. They will travel to Oakland to take on the Wildcats on Friday night, September 20.
