Ever seen your classmate focused in class and wondered what they’re listening to in their headphones? Well, it could very well be the buzz of a series of frequencies meant to relax your mind…When it comes to trying to focus on an assignment, making your brain quiet, or even sleeping, these tasks can be hard to complete when there’s no silence in your mind. Most people have heard of the flat, ringing tone of white noise, but did you know that there are multiple frequencies of this? While the most common type of noise is white noise, there is also pink, black, violet, brown, and even green noise.
As an avid listener of these different noises, I have some strong opinions on their character. As if this is a Dance Moms pyramid, I’ll be ranking the noises based on how annoying they are (bottom of the pyramid) to how relaxing they are (top of the pyramid).
“It feels very relaxing, calming, and soothing,” senior Ines Shaw, a brown noise enthusiast, said. “I would not be able to sleep without brown noise, it’s my life.”
