On May 29, 1997, a peaceful swim in the Wolf River, in Memphis, Tennessee, led to an unexpected tragedy. 28 years later, and his name still rings in the ears of many. Jeff Buckley’s lasting legacy and the impact of his music raise the question: Is it ever over?
The new documentary, “It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley,” is a film that showcases the life of the musician. It is a sneak peek into his more personal morality and follows a sequence of interviews from loved one,s including his mother, friends, and girlfriends. In this cinematic piece, you get to hear many wonderful stories of Jeff Buckley and his spontaneous adventures. He was described as having a “lust for life,” as stated by Dave Lory in an interview for the film. His mother, Mary Guilbert, mournfully noted, “Nobody has loved me more, or better than he.” The melancholy documentary features quotes and stories that best describe the love he had for the people in his life.
Senior Kylie Lusk started listening to Jeff Buckley in 7th grade while going through a rough patch. Lusk says it’s hard to find music that you resonate with, but expressed that Jeff Buckley’s sound held such raw emotion and was so soulful that it could be felt through one’s whole being.
Arcata High junior Christian Rose, when interviewed about the singer, replied, “I’m actually listening to Jeff Buckley right now.” All three fans are very passionate about their love for his “angelic voice”
Senior Skyler May describes Jeff Buckley’s music as very moving and filled with emotional messaging. May depicted Jeff Buckley’s songs as relatable, saying anybody could connect his messages with their own stories. Although only a single album was released before his death, May believes that it has given the artist eternal life in our memories.
Art teacher Kayla Gaskil discovered Buckley’s music through a friend. “My friend and I had a ‘cry’ playlist where we would share our cry songs, and one of theirs was ‘lover you should’ve come over’ so then I started listening to him.” Gaskell enjoys his distinctive sound. An anonymous Arcata High School student said, “It’s never over… except with all my ex-girlfriends.”
