Arcata volleyball teams emerged with a victory from their matches with the Fortuna Huskies during their home game on Thursday, September 25th.
The freshmen/sophomore (frosh/soph) team won their first set 25-22.
“We were struggling a little bit in the beginning, but I’m glad we pulled through,” freshman Pearl Koepke said. “Somehow we made it work. We still think we could have been more energized, but I’m glad we won.”
Freshman Jade Frimodig agreed they could have done better, but everyone has those moments.
“I’m really proud of us, and we had a lot of fun,” Frimodig said.
The second and final set of the game was 25-21, Arcata.
“I was really happy to see the team stay focused until the end of the game and be able to take home the win,” frosh/soph team Head Coach Murray Koch said. “The energy started off a little bit low in the gym since we’re such an early game, but by the time it came to the end of the game, things were really rolling, and I’m really proud of them for sticking with it.”
The Arcata JV team won their first set, but lost their second.
“We were always trying to keep the energy up and stay consistent, even when we got down, and then we pulled out to the end,” freshman Ilya Kelly said.
Head Coach of JV, Lola Renteria, said that the team got ahead early, but the game was bumpy in the middle.
“We all talked and communicated,” sophomore Ellie White said. “We pushed through and kept swinging after every ball.”
Sophomore Amara Champ noted the team did well covering, going for everything, and never gave up.
“I thought my girls did a great job in the game,” Head Coach of JV Lola Renteria said. “I’m glad we pulled it out. They did a super good job working together and talking, and I thought we played really well as a team.”
The game ended when Arcata JV won their third game, and shortly following, varsity came out strong in their first set.
“We definitely picked it up as the night went on,” senior Pearl Smith said.
The student section, mostly clad in the theme of tropical wear, came ready with witty cheers and yelled as loudly as they could.
“I am very happy with how we played tonight. We stayed confident and on the offense. Nora, Pearl, Kyla, Colby, and Betty [were] all hitting hard and tipping smart,” varsity coach Laurie Griffith said. “We are looking forward to playing Mack next week.”
Their next game is on Tuesday, September 30th, at McKinleyville High School and Pink Night, to honor Breast Cancer Awareness, against Eureka at home on Tuesday, October 7th–go show your support!
