Buttered up: Butter your bae for V-day

Baking and creating something with the person you love can be one of the most magical things out there. Keep in mind though, even if you’re single and feeling lonely this Valentine’s Day, it’s also a great time to show yourself some love.

Chillin’ with your beloved, are you having a hard time trying to decide what to get them this lovey-dovey season? Well, if you think that the Walmart stuffies are played out, you can’t remember what their favorite flower is, or can’t think if they’re a silver or gold kind of girl, consider an alternative–one that fills the belly, the heart, and the spirit. Give the gift of baked goods.

Senior Aliviana Bacca-Lastra entertained the idea of a baked goods exchange with her partner on Valentine’s Day.

“My Pookie, he likes to eat. When we sit down and eat it’s good bonding time. It makes him happy. So, receiving a sweet treat from him would make me happy,” Bacca-Lastra said.

Art teacher Kayla Gaskill also reflected on how she would feel to receive baked goods from her partner as a gift.

“I would be ecstatic! It would be very hard for me not to indulge in tasty treats,” Gaskill said.

Gaskill went on to recommend students to think outside of the box this year.

“Chocolate-covered strawberries are very generic, and it’s hard because of the chocolate. There are other tasty treats that people can do, including fruit! Go to Pinterest,” Gaskill said.

Bacca-Lastra asserted that she would be on her cookie grind, specifically with peanut butter ones. Gaskill concurred and had some further recommendations for what else was best to make for your boo thang.

“I’ve been making these, I call them Snickerdoops, it’s a stuffed date with peanut butter and a pecan and you dip it in chocolate with salt on top. It’s a very decadent vegan and gluten-free treat.”

Senior couple Evan Azinger and Violet Fogg got their bake on as they made strawberry cupcakes with cream cheese frosting.

The two said the experience was overall positive and would only change the recipe.

“Less sugar,” is something they would add in the future, “We were too lazy to taste test and the recipe called for two cups of powdered sugar so, the frosting turned out a bit too sweet,” Fogg said.

The two said they would recommend the activity to other couples, cautioning them to ensure they have all their ingredients and to soften, not melt, the butter beforehand. Their 6 month anniversary falls on Valentine’s Day and they plan to bake a cake together in celebration.

Baking and creating something with the person you love can be one of the most magical things out there. Keep in mind though, even if you’re single and feeling lonely this Valentine’s Day, it’s also a great time to show yourself some love. Make a whole cheesecake, frost some fun cookies, any shape, and munch while watching “Saltburn.” You deserve it boo boo.
