A folk dance group comes to campus!

Yes, you heard right, Arcata High is starting a baile folklórico group! Along with bringing more culture to AHS, students will get the chance to do more in their free time. Baile folklórico is a traditional baile for the Hispanic community.

It was established in 1952 by Amailia Hernadez. The dance incorporates many traditional dances from Mexico’s different regions and states.

Students at Arcata High School are extremely excited. It was mentioned at the meeting of the Latinx and Mecha clubs that there will be baile folklórico and the number of students who were interested in participating as part of this dance is many people said they were looking forward to the inclusivity this new program will bring to the school.

“I think it’s a great way to represent our culture because Hispanic culture is not so big here at Arcata High,” Samantha Martinez-Mota who is in 10th grade said. “If anything, the only Hispanic things we have on the campus are Mecha and Latinx clubs.”

Spanish teacher Anayeli Auza also expressed her opinion on baile folklórico at Arcata High. “I think it is very important to showcase different cultures at Arcata High School. And it’s important to the kids because there will be representation and it will definitely create a more welcoming campus for students who have ties or know of baile folklórico,” Auza said.

Many positive opinions have been going around about the new addition of baile folklórico.

Help this idea come together by attending LatinX and Mecha meetings. Many students are excited to see everything come together and not only be an idea.
