In the age of septum piercings and necklace stacks, some students are hesitant to “mix metals,” and instead opt for one color of jewelry. This practice dates back to the 1950’s, when wearing gold and silver together was deemed a “fashion sin.” We asked 10 students this question, “Do you mix metals, why or why not?” Here are their responses.
Amira Wanden, senior: “Not really. Wearing one metal is a very cohesive look. Like for me, I wear silver. When you’re shopping for jewelry, a lot of the time, it has different vibes depending on the color and what it goes with.”
Charlotte Brands, senior: “I don’t really care about mixing metals, but I prefer gold because I like the look of uniform jewelry. I think that if you have cool pieces, mixing metals doesn’t matter.”
Arthur Yang, junior: “Nah I don’t mix metals because I like it pure. One hundred percent gold, maybe with some silver in it.”
Solona Mendle-Nickle, senior: “I definitely do love to mix metals because I feel like I have a bunch of jewelry where the vibe is the same but the metal is different. I like all of my jewelry and so I want to wear as much as I can.”
Ben Letts, senior: “I don’t wear jewelry so I don’t really care. If I did wear jewelry, I probably still wouldn’t care.”
Ash Osceola, senior: “I personally don’t do that. I just choose silver because it’s just more neutral and looks better with a lot of clothes.”
Eron Luoma, senior: “I do mix metals because contrasting colors and textures look good together.”
Piper Bjorkstedt, senior: “I prefer silver, but I have a gold anklet because it’s really not that deep, you know? I’m not gonna limit myself because of the metal and I think it’s cool to contrast them.”
Zoe Watts-Tobin, junior: “I personally love how it looks when people mix metals. One of my nose piercings was silver on my right side, and on my left side it was gold. I would mix my jewelry and I thought that it looked really cool.”
Bella DeCarli, sophomore: “I do because I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. Sometimes I only wear gold or only wear silver, but I don’t really think mixing metals matters that much.”
