Girls Tennis:
The Arcata girls’ tennis team has continued their win streak into this season, winning every match they have competed in, and now the HDNL league title as well. They have a solid ladder and many new freshmen, so it looks as if they will continue to win in the years to come. There has been good chemistry amongst the teammates as well, making this season a great bonding experience for all of the girls, while also helping the incoming freshmen feel welcome and excited to continue their high school tennis careers.
Girls Soccer:
After a not-so-promising start to the season, the girl’s soccer team was able to pick it up and run through the season with a record of 8-3-2. One star player has been holding down the field between the goalposts. Sophomore Sonja Vevoda-Whalig is playing her first year as the starting goalkeeper and has not disappointed with four shutouts this season. The Tigers are currently competing in the NCS playoffs and are looking to extend their season for a few more weeks.
Girls Golf:
This season, the Arcata girls’ golf team went undefeated once again. Their roster included many returning players, which gave them an advantage in skill when playing against other teams. However, this also means that many of the team’s players are leaving after this season, as many of them are seniors. They won all of their matches and continued to improve throughout the season, which contributed to an overall successful year.
Cross Country:
As in most seasons, Arcata is dominating cross country again. The runners, both boys and girls, are taking control of the courses and finishing on top. In their most recent and final HDNL meet, six Arcata girls finished in the top nine, while five Arcata boys finished in the top eight, including a first-career win by sophomore Evan Poston.
Boys Soccer:
The boys’ soccer team has struggled with ups and downs all season. However, this has not seemed to interfere with their spirit in the game. They have struggled with the injuries of key players but were also able to overcome the adversity and play their best game with important people on the sidelines. Their coach is very proud of them for being able to bounce back after big losses. There are a lot of seniors on the team, while also quite a few juniors, so we are sure they will continue to be powerful next season, hopefully with fewer injuries.
Football:
The team had one of the best seasons in the program’s history, being first in the HDNL with an unbeaten record of 5-0 and 9-0 on the season. Their 20 seniors played a prominent role in the team’s success. Arcata is successful on both sides of the ball, with an average of 39.44 points per game, and the opposing team to an average of 14.44 points. They will play in the NCS and have high hopes for playoffs.
Cheer:
This year, the team became close with one another, which helped both on and off the field. First-year head coach Amy Collenberg helps tremendously with the cheer squad’s success. While the team has many returning athletes, they have freshman duo Kaiya Wolven and Gianna Griggs, who have progressed as flyers rapidly this football season.
Girls Volleyball:
The Arcata volleyball team had an amazing season. The girls beat Del Norte for the first time in about 20 years and it ended up helping the team win the league championship with a 9-1 season record. They went on to play in NCS but unfortunately lost in the first round. The seniors played very well and the juniors appear to be well equipped for next season. Arcata will certainly continue to be a force in the league.
