We all love the idea of a sweet Valentine’s gift or treat from our friends or significant others, but what are some of the deciding factors of whether or not you have a Valentine? Through Instagram and TikTok it’s very popular around this time of year that couples repost that their significant other hasn’t asked them to be their Valentine yet, what is the cause of this?
After scrolling through many TikTok posts and looking at the comments it’s become very obvious that the internet is on the ‘yes’ side of the situation, where many of the comments were just joking around and claiming that they don’t want to be the ones to ask. While other comments just straight up say ‘The only way that not asking is acceptable is if your partner clearly states that they do not care or genuinely just don’t want to be asked.’
On my Instagram, I posted a poll that asked “If you are already dating do you have to ask to be Valentine’s?” Over 60 people voted, but 36 Arcata High Students said yes while only 5 people said no.
“Yes you should have to ask, but either one can ask just because it would be cute! It doesn’t have to be anything crazy, it just reminds your partner that you’re thinking of them on that special day,” senior Abby Issa said
Abby pointed out good points that you should always let your partner know that you’re thinking of them every day, but especially on Valentine’s Day so they don’t feel left out from all of the fun activities.
Ray Campbell states that it shouldn’t matter and that there’s no reason for this to be an issue, she said, “It’s a given to me if you’re already dating since asking somebody to be your Valentine is basically asking someone out.”
Is it the same? Many TikTok posts say ‘no!’ A post by @spencer.barbosa states that although it’s not a requirement, you should still do it based on your love and affection for your loved one. You don’t have to spend tons of money on each other but yet should still show that they make an impact on your life and that you appreciate it.
Based on all of the information that I received, the students of Arcata High vote yes to asking their significant others to be their Valentine.
