On a sunny Tuesday afternoon, the most original car club in Humboldt by the name of Humbugs, gave a very generous donation to Arcata High’s engaged auto shop classes. Humbugs seizes the opportunity to give back to their community by any means. They not only donate to other local high schools in Humboldt, but also donate to charitable organizations in the area
“We have donated to places like Mirandas Rescue, the Wildlife Refuge, Sequoia Humane Society, as well as donating to food and clothing drives. Anyway to give back to others, we want part in it,” Carole Cox said in response to where they have spread some of their automotive positivity. Cox, a member of the Humbugs group, neck in neck with her husband Jere Cox. Two of individuals who came in their 59’ Kharmann Ghia to donate to Arcata High, along side Bob Sherman and his sick 87’ Westfalia Synero. As they come together and support Arcata High’s auto course, they keep a genuine down to earth attitude seeking any way they can find an opportunity to be of service.
A donation like this to a class not only is beneficial to the students in the class, but to Torg Sahlman, the auto teacher. He prepares students with basic knowledge of automotive vehicles, as well as has built a strongbond with Humbugs and their classic vehicles.
Senior Clyde Sundeen recalls that they enjoy being in Arcata’s auto class, and that the money given is a huge deal.
“They donated money which was very generous of Humbugs and a ideal for our situation because our funding situation isn’t the greatest. So this is a substantial event,” Sundeen said
“The first time I met them was when they were donating money 3 years ago to the program, and that was the first time I knew of them,” Salhman said, recalling the first time he had ever met the Humbugs. “It was nice because we started talking, because I’ve owned a couple of bugs, and I had come up in one. But we immediately dove into talking about Volkswagen.” The car brand Volkswagen is more than just a sheet of metal, it has soul.
