With the stormy weather looming on Humboldt County, students of Arcata High and the community of Humboldt County try to prepare for the unpredictable weather patterns that bring heavy rain, strong winds, and potential flooding.
Preparing for stormy weather involves several critical steps to ensure safety and minimize risks. Staying informed is super important; students and parents should monitor local weather updates through reliable sources and sign up for campus alert systems.
How do the students and community feel and prepare for the dramatic storms that are currently happening in Humboldt?
Is sophomore Mason Bauserman prepared for the upcoming and current storms? Bauserman believes that he is because his family has a refrigerator with all types of protein in it on his front porch. But Bauserman doesn’t believe that there is a need for an emergency box. Bauserman said, “The storms don’t really get that bad in Humboldt, so you don’t need an emergency box. We have generators and food so just make sure you’re able to get to that stuff.”
An emergency box which is also known as an emergency kit or a first aid box, is a container that contains items that you and your family can use to survive in an emergency situation. Some emergency boxes may include water, non-perishable food, warmth like a sleeping bag or blanket, personal items like clothes and health information, and stuff for safety like a flashlight and insect repellent.
Bauserman has had some experience with the stormy weather. A few years ago when his trampoline was picked up and found in his neighbor’s backyard twice during different storms. The second time when they found the trampoline, it was torn in pieces. His dad made sure the trampoline was in the ground with stakes so it didn’t blow away during any upcoming storms.
How are you supposed to prepare outside for the severe weather conditions? Many suggest cleaning your gutters, and trimming your trees so you can prevent broken windows, but you also want to seal your windows or make sure there are no cracks in the window seal.
The biggest piece of advice that you should follow is to be safe, and make sure you and your family are informed about the weather that may happen. But you also want to make sure that you have all of your necessary items, contact PG&E if your power is out, or look on their website for information on upcoming outages.
