Marvin is fighting two of his brother’s agents in the kitchen of one of his houses. One lunges at him, throws a punch and he catches it with a wire brush scraping it across his hand. The other attacks him, but Marvin hits him in the groin and kicks him in the head, knocking him to the ground. He then hits him with an elbow to the face. The first guy comes back and throws himself at Marvin, but gets blocked and he gets put into an arm bar. Marvin hits him in the leg, knocking him down, and hits the second one with another kick to the face.
Love Hurts is an action-packed romantic-comedy hybrid. This movie is truly deserving of an R rating. The rating stems pretty much only from all of the violence, gore, and death throughout the film. Going into this movie, I did not know what to expect. I had watched the main trailer once or twice before. When I started the movie, I had no idea it would go the route it did.
The star, Ke Huy Quan (who plays Marvin, the lead), has acted in 23 movies. Everything Everywhere All at Once, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and The Goonies are the popular films he’s headlined. Ke won his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in Everything Everywhere All at Once. Ke was the true gem of this movie. Being an Oscar winner, he is more than qualified for this role. His talent just wasn’t used to the best of his ability.
Marvin Gable is a humble realtor agent who lives an unsuspecting life, but you soon discover the double life that Marvin has been living. He used to be a professional assassin working with his brother. He left that because he fell in love with one of his hits, Rose (played by Ariana Debose). The plot of the movie is about Marvin and Rose gaining their freedom by fighting everyone Marvin’s brother sends after them.
I won’t mindlessly bash this movie for its poor plot or lack of chemistry between Marvin and Rose. For one, the combat choreography was great. There are also two scenes with an unnerving level of gore but that’s neither here nor there. The director of the movie, Jonathan Eusebio, has done stunt work for 25 years, which truly shows in the film. This is also his debut movie as a director, which is also noticeable.
In the end, it was an enjoyable movie to watch for the most part. Some things can be forgiven taking into mind the fact that it was the director’s debut film. The movie’s highlights were Ke, the combat, and some of the jokes, though on the nose or seeming forced, were pretty funny. Overall this movie scores a 5/10.
