As we creep into spring, it’s a good time to get outside! Humboldt County offers many opportunities to explore the outdoors, including numerous hikes and trails. Whether they’re familiar already or an opportunity for a new adventure, these are some well-known trails to explore this spring.
Strawberry Rock
While it may be muddy this time of year, Strawberry Rock is a classic Trinidad hike that leads you through the forest to a rocky lookout. The trail itself is relatively clear, with rock arrows leading the way. Strawberry Rock itself has ropes attached that allow you to climb to the top and survey the views of Trinidad and out to Clam Beach.
Distance: 3.4 miles round trip
Estimated Time: ~ 1 hour
Directions: Take exit 728 into Trinidad. Drive straight on Frontage Road; public parking at the end; trailhead behind a gate on private property.
Sunny Brae Beith Creek Loop
After a recent rainstorm, little waterfalls and creeks fill up along this trail, making for a pretty rainy season walk. Aside from a few steep parts, this hike is relatively moderate, with small rolling hills.
Distance: 2.8-mile loop
Estimated Time: ~ 45 minutes
Directions: Sunny Brae forest trailhead on Margaret Lane; entrance next to where Margaret Lane meets Buttermilk Lane at the roundabout.
Wedding Rock
Wedding Rock is located within Sue-meg State Park, with great scenic views of the ocean. Within the park, there are numerous trails to follow, including the one leading down to Agate Beach. A map can easily be found when you enter the park and campground.
Distance: 0.3-mile loop
Estimated Time: ~ 20 minutes, quick!
Directions: Park in Sue-meg State Park. You must pay an $8 day-use fee per vehicle. Using a map, you can locate parking right by Wedding Rock itself or further away if you want to explore other areas of the park.
Trinidad Head Loop
Trinidad Head is a classic Trinidad hike. This well-maintained trail starts at sea level and rises to about 358 feet. This walk is a great activity for people of all ages, especially families. Throughout the hike, there are many places to step off the trail and enjoy views from benches and lookouts.
Distance: 1.7-mile loop
Estimated Time: ~ 1 hour
Directions: Driving into Trinidad and down to Trinidad State Beach, you’ll find yourself at the base of Trinidad Head. The trails go up the side of the hill, wrapping both directions around the Head in a loop.
Prairie Creek Fern Canyon Loop
This hike takes you on a journey through an amazing canyon with thousands of ferns covering the sides. Multiple scenes from Star Wars were filmed here!
Distance: 1-mile loop
Estimated Time: ~ 1 hour
Directions: You must pay a $12 day-use fee per vehicle. This hike is also disability accessible! An electric, action-track, all-terrain track chair is available for impaired visitors by reservation. Call ahead to reserve.
