As the air gets colder and crisper and the leaves begin turning orange and yellow, the fall and winter seasons are quickly approaching. It’s now the time to start dressing warmer to stay comfortable in the chilly weather of the colder seasons. But how can we balance affordability and fashion?
In the cold weather of fall and winter, staying comfortable and fashionable can be a hard skill to learn. But if you find the balance between looking good and feeling good, you’re on the right track to having a great fall and winter. With warmer shirts, pants, sweaters, or jackets, many clothing options can provide you warmth and comfort.
But first, let’s start off with what not to wear. There are many kinds of clothes that just don’t work for the colder seasons, and outfits that won’t keep you warm aren’t ideal. “Whenever I see people wearing shorts, I know they slackin’ and I know they (are) cold,” senior Rye Davis said. Why spend money on clothes that won’t keep you warm?
There are many different brands and stores that sell warm, affordable, and cute clothes that are perfect for fall and winter. Junior Julie Omaha named Brandy Melville as one of her favorite stores to get clothes for fall. When asked about her most worn items of clothing in these seasons, Omaha said, “It’s probably jeans, Brandy Melville tops, and zip-ups.” Many brands sell clothing seasonally as well, and as the weather begins to shift, they start to sell warmer clothing.
Many students at Arcata High also turn to thrift stores to get most of their clothes and prefer to buy clothes second-hand, rather than brand-new. “I usually get all my clothes from thrift stores and don’t buy new because it’s too expensive. So you could just go to any thrift store really in Arcata or around,” said Davis. Thrifting is a much more affordable and sustainable way to get your clothes, and most thrift stores in Arcata sell very fashionable clothing.
Some local thrifts that often receive praise from Arcata High students are Eco-Groovy Deals, Shipwreck, Daydream, and the Clothing Dock. These stores are all within five minutes from campus and carry well-renowned brands such as Carhartt, Dickies, North Face, Patagonia, and others that have warm and comfortable clothes.
In the fall and winter seasons, the balance of affordability and fashion overall is essential. Being warm and looking good are two things you need to accomplish to have a great fall and winter.
