After ending last season, the girls’ Varsity basketball team was ready to take on the preseason and live up to the name they made for themselves in the previous season. The Tigers have one goal for this season: to win state. In their preseason they played many Division 1 and Division 2 teams to prepare them for the rest of their season and had a record of 9-6.
The Arcata Tigers Girl’s Varsity Basketball team started their preseason by driving down to Piedmont, California to go against the #1 ranked team in division 4 and #37 in California. Going into this game the Tigers had only two practices with the full team, due to scheduling conflicts with fall sports. The Tigers fell short 56-41 but counted this as a learning point, not a loss.
Up next for the tigers, they traveled to Miramonte, California to play in the PEYO Classic hosted by Miramonte. Starting the tournament, they played Heritage from Brentwood, California, ranked #51 in division 1. The Tigers were able to come together and beat Heritage 45-40. Next in the bracket the Tigers had to face the hometeam, Miramonte, and fell short 28-31. Finishing off the PEYO Classic, the Tigers faced Northgate, losing in double overtime 49-50.
They traveled down to East Nicholaus to play in the Love of the Game tournament hosted by East Nicholaus. Opening up the tournament they played the host team beating them 52-34. Then they played Redding Christain beating them 65-36 and to finish the tournament, they played Hamiltion beating them 63-30. In the tournament, the whole team got to see big minutes on the court and contribute, here the Tigers were able to find their groove.
Their next tournament held at Justin-Sienna was going to be a tough one. In the first game, the Tigers took on the 32nd team in California, Cardinal Newman, but fell short 44-53 after giving them a battle. Playing for Constellation they continued the tournament by beating Carlmont 68-57 and finished it off by beating Monte Vista 45-32.
As the last tournament for the season, they played in the West Coast Jamboree in Pleasanton, California. They fell short in the first game against Freedom with a final score of 44-61, their biggest preseason deficit. The Tigers were able to win Constellation, beating University 60-51 and Lick-Wilmerding 57-50.
The Tigers schedule two non-league games for their preseason against Pleasant Valley and Chico. After playing Pleasant Valley, the Tigers came home with a loss of 60-67. Traveling again to Chico, the Tigers fell short 44-47 in the last minute of the game.
After a successful preseason overall, the Girls’s Varsity Basketball Team feels confident and ready for the rest of their season. They’ve been building the team chemistry they need to make this season the most memorable one yet. Check-in soon for updates regarding their season!
