Everyone knows the February holiday Valentine’s Day, filled with red and pink, chocolate and flowers, and all things to do with love. But what about Galentine’s Day?
Galentine’s Day is a celebration that should be normalized around the world as a way to celebrate platonic love and friendship, and to let your friends know that you love them.

Many choose to have a Galentine’s-themed party every year with snacks, gifts, and music. Girls dress up in their pink and red attire to celebrate the holiday. People also like to make love-themed treats and snacks.
“We made heart-shaped pizzas and we stuck with the red theme with pepperoni and peppers and all that kind of stuff,” senior Amara Rex said.
To celebrate their favorite gals, some have also chosen to make special gifts to show their love and appreciation for them. These gifts can include cards, jewelry, crafts, or anything cute and on-theme.
“People do make gifts. A couple of years ago our friend made CDs with songs that reminded her of us,” senior Hiro Sugata said.
Aside from dressing up, making gifts, and having fun foods, Galentine’s is most importantly a way to bring people together and normalize platonic relationships during the Valentine’s season. Yes, Valentine’s Day is an important day to celebrate that one special significant other in your life, but it’s also a day to celebrate your best friends!
“I think it should be more universal because, you know, Valentine’s Day shouldn’t be only for that one other person in your life. Valentine’s Day should be universal in the sense that it’s both for friends and your other person,” Rex said.
“I think that Galentine’s is a way to be more inclusive and fun, and you just get to spend the whole day with your friends which, if you’re not in a relationship, then it’s way less pressure to have to do something with a significant other. You can just hang out with your friends and celebrate platonic love,” Sugata said.
Even though Galentine’s is, by name, technically meant for girls to celebrate, it can be something that everyone celebrates. You can also just have a party with your group of friends, regardless of gender, to have fun celebrating Valentine’s.
“And if you don’t have another person, that’s fine, because you’ve got all your gals! Or your bros, I’m not judging,” Rex said.
