A new tradition at Arcata High, the fall talent show Arcata’s Got Talent has begun to make a name for itself as students utilize the stage as a platform to perform for a larger audience than they may never have before.
This year, the show decided to incorporate “The Hunger Games” as a theme, which encouraged acts to contain survivalist characteristics similar to those present in the popular novel and movie series created by Suzanne Collins. Performances included stage combat, singing, live music, aerial dance, slam poetry, and more, as these aspiring stars took to the stage and created a night full of amazement for the parents and community members in the audience.
The crowd seems to have been impressed by their performance, as both parents and performers alike have commended the show for its intriguing and unique acts.
The show was also given high praise for following its dystopian “Hunger Games” theme, with a majority of acts pertaining to the greater storyline present in the show.
Senior Grace Humphreys, both a performer and production assistant in the show for multiple years, believes that having a theme held the show together very nicely.
“It was interesting with a theme this year because it gave us something to work with instead of just a talent show,” Humphreys said. “Sticking with a theme would be cool to make it more exciting.”
Senior Julia Oberlander was also a performer in the show, dancing to the K-POP song “Lucky Girl Syndrome” by ILLIT. She had nothing but positive reviews of the show and her fellow performers when it came to theming.
“I thought that they really went for it,” Oberlander said. “There was a lot of fighting and that was really cool.”
Another review of the show from the perspective of a parent in the school community followed suit with Oberlander and Humphreys, claiming that the performers fluidly incorporated the theme into their acts.
“I especially liked the theme,” an anonymous parent said. “It was very fun. The emcees were amazing with their daring commentary.”
Upon questioning, several of the viewers of Arcata’s Got Talent believed that the price of admission was a bit high given the contents of the performance, however, they were happy to support the school community nonetheless.
Many things went well for the student-run show this season, but the addition of theming seems to have been a hit for the Arcata’s Got Talent production and we hope to see it again next year.
