Thrift stores have been rising in popularity for years. As prices of essential items increase, many people have found comfort in the affordability of secondhand shopping. Arcata has become an epicenter for thrifters, having both thrift stores, whose selections come from community donations, and second-hand stores, that buy used clothes for their selection. The following are my favorite thrift stores in Arcata:
Thrift Stores:
#1 YouthAbility Thrift Shop:
YouthAbility is my absolute favorite. They have an extremely wide selection of anything you could need second-hand and a focus on hiring youth who face adversity finding employment. They have low set prices for everything except staff picks and furniture, and provide discounts every day on their colored tags. Mondays through Fridays you can get 15% off if you are a student or follow their social media. Saturday is the best day to go with every colored tag being 50% off.
#2 Miranda’s Rescue Arcata:
Miranda’s is a small gem hidden in an old bar on the Plaza. Inside, you’ll find a wide array of clothes for affordable prices. You’ll be pleased to learn they have discounts every day, with the best deals on Saturday when all colored tags are ¢50. One con is the lack of dressing rooms, which all other stores on the list have, so be willing to slip something on over your clothes if you need to try on your future favorite piece.
Second Hand Stores:
#1 Eco-Groovy Deals:
Eco-Groovy Deals is one of the oldest second-hand stores in Arcata. Opening in 2009 with a commitment to reducing clothing waste in landfills, it’s been a long-standing pillar in the local world of sustainability. They have high-quality clothes that are like new ones for low prices with monthly discounts as well. If you want even more options, they recently opened a second outlet on K Street. With their incredibly friendly and welcoming vibe, Eco-Groovy Deals easily is my #1.
#2 Daydream Arcata:
Daydream is the newest addition to Arcata’s thrift scene. Opening around a year ago, this shop immediately became a town favorite. They have a very large selection of high-end and trendy clothes, with a focus on non-fast fashion pieces. All items are sourced by the community through their buy/sell/trade program, which gives cash or credit in return. One common issue many people encounter is the high prices of their more worn items.
