It’s official… Winter is over, and what better way to celebrate spring than with a vibrant song. It’s time to put your headphones on and appreciate the blooming flowers and sunny skies. The question of the season is: What exactly makes a good spring music selection?
Sophomore Dylan Scofield loves listening to classical music in the spring.
“One song I keep listening to is Hungarian Dance No. 5 [by Johannes Brahms]. And also Four Seasons [by Antonio Vivaldi]” Scofield said.
While some do not listen to music seasonally, others embrace the different aesthetics of seasons by listening to different genres of music. Unsurprisingly, this synchronizes with emotions usually felt during these seasons. During the summer, lighthearted, warm, and carefree music is preferred. In winter, people gravitate towards slower, more somber music. And in spring, happy and optimistic music becomes popular as the cold weather and foggy skies slowly slip away.
Oftentimes, humans are drawn to music that evokes emotion. Certain songs can validate a current emotional state, or influence what you feel. In pairing a song with seasonal visuals and weather, music can help one experience the world around them more viscerally. The enthusiasm that many have in exchanging winter weather for sunny skies pairs nicely, and can be emphasized with the right soundtrack.
On the other hand, some choose to listen to music year round. This can generate a feeling of stability with the changing seasons. Sophomore Liana Chin feels that music can apply to any season.
“I’ve started listening to the Dresden Dolls recently, but other than that I don’t have seasonal music,” Chin said.
Sophomore Arya Niles also agrees that listening to music seasonally is not for her. They admitted that happier music fits the spring vibe better.
In general, music is one of the most subjective art forms, so it makes sense for there to be differing opinions on spring music. So whether you change listening habits to match the nicer weather, or keep listening to the same stuff the rest of the year, music is the perfect way to get through the last few months before summer.
