If you have ever been in science teacher Shannon Kresge’s class, you know that she has a daily smoothie and at least one Yerba Mate to keep her going through the day. As an experiment, we have convinced her to go a week without Yerba to see how it changes her. We conducted this experiment in a balanced and scientific manner to ensure accurate results.
We hypothesize that her productivity would decrease during this experiment. Our dependent variable was Kresge’s behavior, and our independent variable was Yerba Mate.
“This is going to be the hardest week of my life!” Kresge said about participating in the experiment.
Before starting the experiment, we collected a few predictions from students.
“I think she would probably end up dead in a ditch by the second day,” senior Cairo Dedini said.
“She will probably throw a book in my face,” senior Mason Blair said.
Senior Hazel Neukom supports this: “She will probably start a fight with Mason Blair and win it.”
By mid-week, Kresge’s behavior radically changed to attest to Kresge’s behavior so far. She has undergone severe physical changes, such as her eyes twitching, deep eye bags, and trying to dress like Bill Nye the Science Guy.
“She has been having intense mood swings and is experiencing narcolepsy due to her not getting enough sleep and not being able to drink a Yerba to keep her alive,” junior Lucy Dieker said.
Her behaviors have only become more extreme during the week, and she has been more short-tempered the longer she keeps going without a Yerba.
On the final day without Yerba, her teacher friends became severely concerned with her health since she was asleep almost all day and hadn’t been as responsive. She kept saying this word over and over again, and it was the only word she had been saying to everyone.
“How are you feeling today?” Reporter Ashlyn Bowen asked Kresge.
“Buh buh…buh…buh buh,” Kresge responded.
Monday, June 2nd, is the first day back to drinking Yerba for Kresge, and we’ll see how she feels.
“I finally feel like I can function normally!” Kresge exclaimed.
Even during this hard week for her, her passion for making her students succeed in class never stopped, and she still taught to her best ability, giving her students her all as she normally does. We can conclude that this experience may have changed her moods, but never changed how amazing of a teacher she is…and that she DEFINITELY needs Yerba.
