Cozy up and settle in, it’s time to pick a movie to watch. A classic dilemma that many face during the holiday season is choosing a movie that is just right. The options seem endless, but around the AHS campus, many have recommendations.
A big ticket factor in people’s movie preferences is nostalgia. People want a movie that gives a glimpse of what Christmas was like when we were young. Although no movie sums up everyone’s childhood, one type of cinema stands tall in this category: Claymation.
“To get comfy I need some tea, some fuzzy socks, and my Christmas pajamas,” senior Madeline Chatfield said. “The most nostalgic movie for me is definitely Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in Claymation.”
Other key genres of holiday movies include ‘saving Christmas,’ and ‘embracing holiday spirit.’ These movies bring back that warm, fuzzy feeling associated with winter holidays. One movie in particular seemed to connect with multiple grade levels.
“A good holiday movie is something that is entertaining for everyone,” sophomore Julia Brands said. “One favorite is probably Elf.”
According to AHS students, great movies can bring people of all ages together. They are usually lighthearted and easy to watch.
“I’m looking for a quirky spin on Christmas, like in Elf,” senior Piper Bjorkstedt said. “He isn’t really saving Christmas. He kinda just is Christmas.”
If you’re looking for a movie with humor, originality, and a good message, How the Grinch Stole Christmas is a classic choice. The multiple recreations, though, have sparked a debate. The 2018 Grinch brought with it some heated opinions. Many completely disregarded it, but others felt it was the best version.
“This is probably controversial,” Brands said. “I think the new animated Grinch is better than the old one.” Senior Madeline Chatfield disagrees.
“I think the new Grinch is overrated,” Chatfield said. “I’m not a fan.”
Still, the message of both movies remains the same.
At Arcata High, everyone seems to have strong feelings about holiday movies. A good movie to watch connects with you and brings feelings of nostalgia and comfort. If you find yourself needing inspiration, three classic choices are Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Elf, or whichever version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas speaks the most to you.
